lyrics

There’s an old bench that sits by the river
In the village where we used to play
And a viaduct arches it over
Like a guardian of brickwork and clay

There’s cornfields and tractor lined meadows
Intersected by footpaths for years
And in the woodlands we used to get busy
Making magical memories

In the Summer we’d get lost on cider
And sleep out all night in the fields
Get up on those railway tunnels
With the wind rushing up through the trees

Say hello to the old town for me
We first met in Dingle and kissed in Tralee
You said we’d be married forever
Ain’t it wonderful dreaming is free.

Down the country lanes we’d be together
On a bicycle not made for two
With overgrown hedges and nettles
It’s a wonder we ever got through

We could ride your wild horses untethered
Down the farm tracks and chalk pits you see
For the twilight it went on forever
Making magical memories
In the pub there’s a snug in the corner
And we’ve just enough money to be
Together alone for an hour or so
Til the bell rings and shatters the dream

Drive the car to a spot in the darkness
Park up and spark up the dream
On the radio, singing to Heaven
Nothing’s ever as good as it seems.

Harlequin records on a bleak Saturday
Punks on the wall by the… takeaway
Rude boys and Goth girls and romantic hair
Got to be seen, but be seen to not care
Junkies all gather by the fountain to feed
While lovers rehearse in the bus station, please!
And the daylight gives in and the streetlights come on
We could walk round once more but I’d rather, go home.

So in the bus stop, in the rain, on a Sunday
This notion it did arrest me
Would I grow old like everyone else does
Singing songs full of old memories

So the concrete path led to the river
And the river it led to the sea
Then an aeroplane over the ocean
Where a new life was waiting for me

Now when I put on those nostalgic glasses
It’s the same boy that’s still inside me
And the daydream it runs on forever
Making magical memories.
